This novel gets a lot right. Most striking to me is its treatment of that murky time of adolescence and how it translates into adulthood. It's just as much a coming of age story as it is a mystery novel (noir). What's more, it's social commentary on very current and universal events, or topics, rather, including racism, domestic violence, the "me too" movement. I loved the "the one about..." moments and they truly made my heart break. They pulled me back to reality and served as a reminder that this novel is more than just a mystery for Bodi (and the reader) to solve. I kept reading for some sort of a satisfying ending, even though I had to keep reminding myself that this novel is not really about that. It's not, and yet it does a good job coming full circle. It seems feeble to say I recommend it - somehow that doesn't do it justice.
