I think the critics were way too harsh on this movie. I'm not sure exactly what they wanted from it. The plot did suffer simply from the size of the universe being built, but I never felt drawn out of the movie as a result. The character development was fine, the visual effects where amazing, acting fine/great, and the story as a whole was engaging. I walked in not knowing a dang thing about the movie and was happily surprised at how much I enjoyed it. If you liked Avatar or Altered Carbon, you're going to like this. James Cameron, Laeta Kalodigris, and Robert Rodriguez all had a hand in this movie. Go see the movie; it needs some help. Otherwise we might not ever get a sequel!

Good action if a little crazy at times. If you're the parent of a small child you may find this movie hard to watch so be warned (see spoilers below). Some of the heavy emotional moments felt shoehorned in. If I could go back I'd probably skip this one. Spoilers: The director's choice of killing off her daughter made very little sense to me. It was really the only relationship I actually enjoyed. It was also a bit cruel to show the death of the child, then do a flashback on what happened inside the apartment. I ended up skipping a bit because I have a very difficult time in movies when young children are forced to watch violence against a loved one, especially when they are yelling 'daddy!' The whole time. It sickens me that this was green lit when it added nothing to the movie.
