This is a beautiful movie, but not a good one. There are interesting parts of the movie: i like the art design and cinematography. The performance of some characters are great. I admired Ari Aster and his first movie, Hereditary, and you can see parallel in the Midsommar. If you identify with the protagonist, you will like this movie. The problem is that it is a movie with "style over substance". The story feels empty because I don't see too much drama and struggles for most of characters. Some characters are too dumb in the story for me to care and Chris is possibly the dumbest character i have seen in this type of movie. I will use this analogy: if Jamie Lee Curtis sees Michael Myers killing someone in front of her and she still thinks it is just a trick-or-treat, and you find it stupid, that is the level of stupidity of 3 male characters. As Aster's fan, I am kind of disappointed but this is only his 2nd movie. I hope that he will be another David Fincher instead of another M. Night Shyamalan.

I think it is an action film classic. Mad Max can become a classic not because it creates a very stylish apocalypstic world, but also the nuance and characters it has put into the story. It is a simple but very moving story. One thing I like about Mad Max himself is that he is, and has never been an invincible superhero. He can do larger-than-life thing but he inspires people around him.

It is a great movie; i will consider it one of the greatest horror movies I have watched, but i won't recommend it to everyone. I will say it this way: if you are not easily sympathetic with characters in a film, you won't like this movie. You will say it is 'overrating", "boring", "making no sense", because you don't invest in this movie psychologically. If you don't give a damn why characters say the things they say and do the things they do, you will not connect the dots and know that the whole movies have been well-crafted. The director, Ari Aster, is great at making personal movie, and it is also a very personal movie to me.
