People are responding just as the upper class of Gotham responded. They didnt get their action packed mindless showdown of hero versus villain so they immediately tune out, and forget or dismiss the deeper truths and intricately crafted psychological profile of the Joker and the issues that overtook his mother. People who are giving this movie bad reviews refuse to recognize the artistic way of making a political statement about the treatment of the lower class while telling the gruesome and heart-wrenching story of a traumatized man being pushed beyond his limits , becoming the villain we know, we fear, we love, we watch with anticipation and laugh at his antics...the Joker
