I can’t agree more with Martin C’s review. It was very written! I have always been a science fiction lover (my e-mail address is scifilover@…). I had hoped Discovery would bring Star Trek back to its roots - depicting a society about hope and a positive future. Instead, it continued down the path every show had taken after Star Trek - The Next Generation - a dark dismal future, where even Star Fleet and the Federation continued to violate its own rules and moral values.
I once attended a Trek convention with Rick Berumen and Nichele Nichols in attendance. I expressed my concern (as did other attendees) about the direction Trek was raking. Rick Berumen simply replied “if we put it out there - they will come!” Nichele Nichols, on the other hand, agreed with me and the other attendees and expressed that she too had concerns about Trek’s direction.
I just finished the second episode of SNW and continue to be excited about Trek again for the first time in decades! The character development and scripting appear to be what is Trek - a show Gene Roddenbury would have been pleased to call his own!
