Really, REALLY poor. I’ve only ever walked out of a cinema showing once but this had me considering it. It’s a shame because, after really enjoying No where Boy, I had high hopes for Back To Black.
From the first scene, the delivery of every sentence is so monotone and the London accents are so forced. The film jumps from life event to life event within minutes, brushing over so many important details in the lead up to Amy’s fame and downfall. They essentially show a bad thing happen to her and then a clip of her walking down an alleyway drinking. They also got many things wrong, even basic things. At one point Blake leaves her and asks for a divorce but a few minutes later she’s performing live and says ‘I’d rather be at home with Blake’ what???? It rushes you through her life without giving you any real plot to focus on or allowing you to bond with any of the people depicted in it. The actress stays looking exactly the same from start to end.
All in all, it’s like a very low budget student film. If you’re going to make a movie about the life of Amy Winehouse, it has to be emotive. It has to be gut wrenching. You have to find an actress who is willing to live the role like Amy lived her songs. You can’t just put anyone in a beehive wig, slap some auto tune on it and film her pretending to stumble around Camden. Amy Winehouse would have been mortified by this.
