I've noted a lot of one star reviews for this game and have decided to jump to its defence.
Straight off the bat, this game doesn't have the EA polish. There's no doubting that. It's like looking at a pneumatic Insta model in real life without the filters, fake lashes and Crayola makeup. It's the girl next door, not a glamour to look at.
It won't appeal to the instant gratification generation, where you can't spend money to buy tokens and make yourself better in a shorter timeframe.
What this game lacks in that polish, it makes up in spades with its gameplay. The options to tailor your gameplay to your strengths are exponential. This game will suit those picking up a golf game for the first time, and those who are old hands and have been playing for 20-30 years. Beginners can set everything to easy and play target golf, veterans can up the difficulty whereby guile, swing tempo and knowledge of how a golf ball works in real life situations are paramount. It can be undoubtedly frustrating (just like real golf) but the ability to craft and shape shots is great and it simulates golf in the best manner I've played.
There are some licenced courses in the game, but where this game defecates all over EA is in the ability to create your own courses. Not by just selecting various holes from different courses to create a course, but to build your own dream 18 from a vacant plot of land. There are various environments from which you can start (linksland, tropical, mountain etc), and the degree of detail in which you can create a course is only limited by your imagination. You can template a course if your patience is limited and make minor tweaks, or you can start from a blank canvas and build one to your exacting specifications. There is a fantastic community of players who have built almost every popular course (Augusta National, St Andrews, Pebble Beach etc), as well as a multitude of other courses worldwide, and amazing new creations also. You will never want for a new course to play.
Customisation of your player is more than reasonable. There are many different outfits, clubs and bits and pieces to keep your player looking fresh, and a lot of licenced gear (Callaway, Titleist, Footjoy) for the brand fans.
I would implore people to give this game a crack, as it is the most fun I've had playing virtual golf in years. Other than a few small tweaks to graphics improvement and maybe some more gear for customisation (that's being nitpicky) it would be the perfect game. But I can guarantee you will enjoy it immensely
