It got rid of the little innocence I had left about race in America / American history. The show is horror, but it’s almost secondary to the events surrounding the times, or in other words: the battle against the country’s oppressing class.
There weren’t any non-oppressive white people in the whole series, there were ones that stayed silent and complicit, and one scene where a kid acted as human. The few questioning white people were immediately shut down by the 95% majority and their lives threatened on even the slightest mention of “leave the black people alone”.
I know not all experiences are this way, I used to read slave narratives and this taking place in the 50s there were other parallel black existences.
However, this does seem to accurately depict what the textbooks teach us about the social climate in America during the early 50s, and what the blacks encountered during the great migration out of the us south because of Jim Crow.
It puts the textbook teachings in movie experience form, with a slant of bleak and horror. It’s gore heavy and vile but not overdone. It’s depressing but insightful and makes me so grateful that I don’t have to be a pioneer in the black integration movement. Refreshing to see raw content that’s not placated for white audiences. It really shows white people as the true oppressor as if it was 1950 today. Excellent job.
