What a mess. It has no idea if it's a faux film star biopic or a depiction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The characters are two-dimensional with only a hint of backstory for Margot Robbie's character; consequently the audience don't feel any empathy. Their trajectories are utterly predictable.
Brad Pitt plays a washed-up, middle-aged heartthrob with fading looks. Let's hope it's not type-casting. Robbie's character is totally unsympathetic. The standout performance is oddly enough Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, who is far more appealing and convincing than all those around him.
The screenplay and direction lack any self-control. Scenes go on and on and on without moving the story forward - self-indulgence and self- regard on the director's part are the inescapable conclusion.
It's a comedy without laughs and a tragedy that no one cares about. David Lean must be revolving in his grave. The only epic that applies to this is failure.
