The critic reviews of this film upset me. I'm from Ohio -Appalachian Ohio, specifically. This story was an all too familiar one and incredibly gripping.
It's true that some of the characters don't have many redeeming qualities, but considering there are people who don't in real life, that seems fitting for a film based on a true story.
I thought the film was beautiful and showed the real difficulties many experience here. I'm glad the story is being told and I'm glad that the main character and his family decided to call Appalachia home once he finished school.
Appalachia has a lot to offer and as someone who also thought I needed to "escape", the longer I'm away from it, the more I want to go back. There is something special there that no other place has. As with any place, you have take the the good with the bad, but in Appalachia, the good outweighs the bad.
