The many positive reviews describe this movie in many ways: exciting, deep, emotional, a roller coaster ride, "it made them cry", clever, hilarious. The list goes on. One quality that I couldn't find anywhere though was "well written". This is not a movie one could easily write down into a novel, simply because there really isn't a coherent plot and flow of events. Watching this movie, I kept finding myself thinking "wait - how did this person get here?", "why are these two people fighting?", why is this person angry?", "what is the motivation of this person in this scene?", or better yet "how does the multiverse work here?", "why does the daughter just happen to be the end all be all puzzle piece of the multiverse? - sounds convenient". The list goes on.
It is an utterly confusing and frustrating movie to people who have a disposition for breaking apart complex puzzles and "looking underneath the hood" and wanting to know how things work. The multiverse is a naturally very confusing topic to most people so having a good storyteller able to effectively guide the viewer/reader through the complex minutiae is critical.
In short, the positive qualities people are giving this film could also be applied to an acid trip or an amusement park ride. This was not an effectively communicated story, making it difficult for me to develop an emotional connection to what was going on.
