Incredible documentary which effectively portrays both the positive and negative sides of an incredible talent, Amy Winehouse, whose life ended far too soon. The media, Blake, and Amy's father have a lot to answer to for enabling and pushing toxicity in her life and aiding in her addiction and vulnerability.
To see her fall from being just a normal and innocent girl with a gift to an impressionable addict who in the end, just wanted her normal past back, is heartbreaking. One thing that stuck with me was seeing talk show host, Jay Leno, praising Amy and giving her a platform during her rise to fame when she was at her best, to then tearing her down and mocking her addiction on live television for laughs. This shows the poisonous and everchanging views the media holds for those in the limelight.
My heart goes out to her two best friends, Jules and Lauren, whose voices and personal stories are sprinkled throughout the film. They stuck with her through everything and just wanted Amy to be happy and healthy. They wanted Amy's father to keep her in rehab and not allow her to go on her American tour without recovering first. They welcomed her friendship back with open arms after Amy seemed to cut them off while being intoxicated in love with Blake, and Jules even spoke on the phone to Amy the day before her death. Heartbreaking.
A must see documentary which was difficult to watch at times. Tony Bennett's admiration and kind words towards Amy at the end hit hard as he was one of her idols. We see her at the beginning mentioning him as one of the people who got her into music, to then seeing her meeting him and recording with him (her nerves and shyness and want to impress him was adorable), to him then closing off the doc.
