I really loved this movie. I enjoyed the progressive message that challenged the outdated, sexist gender roles. Girls need to know that they are powerful in their own right and not existing for men with no voice of their own. This movie showed girls that women have talents and worth outside of being a wife and mother.
I noticed that the step-mother and step sisters were not portrayed as completely evil. That is a much more realistic presentation of these characters as most people aren’t all bad or all good. These women were trapped in the social constructs that their current society had dictated for them. They were doing what they thought they had to do to survive. Even the stepmother softens in the end. It really makes you feel for these characters.
It was a little cheesy, but it’s a musical so that’s to be expected. My biggest complaint though, is that there was not enough of Billy Porter. I would have liked to have seen more of him. Got that movie makers? MORE BILLY PORTER.
