I loved every second of it. It's visually appealing, with plenty colour, amazing sets, costumes & makeup and of course, the ALW songs. There's even a new ALW song for this production - Beautiful Ghosts.
The negative reviews I've seen by "professional critics" seem to be critical of Cats as a musical concept, and even disparage the underlying poetry, rather than having anything in particular against this new movie version.
There's been some unnecessary body criticism, which seems to have been allowed as they're "cats".
Eliot's poems are fables, reflecting the diversity of humans with all their foibles and weaknesses.
Since the first silent actors lost favour because their voices didn't match their silent personas, singing actors has been problematic - some are simply much better singers than others. But so what? Some actors are simply much better actors than others, and we don't make an issue of it.
From the moment I first saw the trailer, I was looking forward to this movie, and I wasn't disappointed.
