This movie effectively depicts the state of denial that most of the population is in regarding the reality of climate change. Despite acknowledgement of climate change by many, at this point, minimal substantive action is being taken to mitigate the worst effects of climate change that are predicted to unfold within this and the following decades. There has been significant disruption to action due to divisive politics, similar to those expressed in ‘Don’t Look Up’. I think it’s unfortunate that a crisis this serious has to be expressed as a parody in order for it to be digestible. However, I’m unsure if people will be receptive to it at all, or continue to carry on as they already do. As a student of environmental science, the possibility of an ending rivaling the sadness expressed in the end of this movie is constantly on my mind. Im hoping that this serves as a wake up call, or a catalyst to begin paying attention. At the very least, begin paying attention to the messages that Leonardo DiCaprio is expressing in real time about the significant threat posed by climate change. If you want a brief but comprehensive understanding of climate change, begin by watching ‘Do the Math’ by Bill McKibben (50 mins on YouTube).
