My flashlight flickered on as I nervously looked at the surrounding trees, the snow crunching upon every step I took. “I just need to make it to the pond, place my hat there.. And the $20 is mine.” I mumbled to myself as I looked at my watch “2:15, I should hurry up.” I picked up the pace, the snow crunching rhythm I had going before became unsteady. I had been walking for 10 minutes, plenty of time to make me paranoid as birds chirping and animals pitter pattering in the soft white snow made me jump, making me more scared. I’ve always been afraid of the dark, I actually have a night light in my room, nobody knows about it. I squint my eyes and look forward, I can see a clearing in the trees. “It’s the lake!” I exclaimed as is sprinted towards the lake.
I slowed down as I approached the round, almost completely circular lake, it was completely frozen but yet deemed “unsafe” by my parents. I tossed my hat on the edge of the lake and went to turn around, “That was eas-” I froze in my tracks as I heard an unusually loud snap of a stick on the ground, my eyes darted from tree to tree. I was almost done searching for the noise until I saw something I couldn’t believe, a dark figure wearing a white mask. “Jake is that you?” I shouted, thinking it was my friend who had dared $20 I wouldn’t bring my hat here at night. The figure slowly stepped into my view, I could make out something in their hand. A knife.
I felt my whole body go numb as realized what might happen, I might die. I turned towards what I thought was where I came from and started running. With each step I lunged forward, the snow crunching louder than before. I glanced behind me and could still see the mask, but.. He wasn’t running, he was hovering. He was only hovering a couple centimeters above the ground, but it was noticeable. I shook my head and kept looking forward, running faster than I’d ever ran before.
I ran and ran, for what felt like hours. Eventually, I didn’t feel the presents of whatever that, spirit? Ghost? Was. I paused and looked behind me, the mask was gone, there was no trace of it. I ran the rest of the way home and climbed into my bedroom window and slid into bed like a snake. I failed to sleep for another hour, too frightened to close my eyes. That night in bed I promised to myself to never, ever, tell anyone about what happened nor to go into that forest again. Because next time, I might not come out alive.
