Congratulations. A movie that cares so much for shock value that it chooses to 'subvert expectations' at every turn at the cost of suspension of disbelief, narrative continuity, so on so forth.
Don't get me wrong. I think all the actors did an excellent job. I don't think anyone else could have done a better job with what they were given. The music is excellent, and the movie looks good on the surface.
Under the hood, just wow. You got what you paid for Disney. You wanted a director who has no concern for continuity and doesn't care about the narrative flow of a trilogy, and you had him direct the second movie of 3 with an expectation that whatever he made, there would be a way to conclude it in the 3rd part. Except that you then ended up spending the 3rd part undoing and retconning so much of this movie's... uh... 'developments'.
TLJ in my opinion isn't a necessary watch for viewers of the sequel trilogy. In fact, it's a lot more like those spin off novels or comics that fit in between major movie parts. I think this is more a movie you can choose to watch if you want to, but I do not think it adds anything to the overall sequel trilogy. For some, it might be better if you forgot this movie even existed.
I guess it's an alright action movie? I think the most memorable scenes ended up being all the action sequences.
Someday, maybe Disney will create something like a 'Clone Wars' series that adds to and improves upon the sequel trilogy, but for the meantime, you could skip this movie.
