I'm not a WWII movie afficiando, but THE 3 part documentary Five Came Back piqued my interest , telling the story of 5 top Hollywood directors who enlisted to use their great talents to document the war in the service of the armed forces. It proved to be a compelling series that witnessed and shaped the war effort, each in their unique styles. They were enlisted men first, true patriots, who produced dozens of documentaries and training films for their fellow soldiers, who went on to command hundreds of men. Their experiences on the front lines of all the war fronts advanced the war effort in service of the military. These directors postalized that all great war movies are actually anti-war messages; the carnage, bombings, destruction, sacrifice and loss of life are horror, but tragically sometimes necessary to defend against evil, and protect universal God -given freedoms and human rights.
The last four years ha made this film series more relevant than ever. All the directors came back from their service experience profoundly changed, and in the years that followed, working back in Hollywood, produced some of the most brilliant films for which they were remembered. An excellent series.
