Very good souls like game that stays true to and respects it's genre predecessors while also bringing new ideas and concepts to the table. There is no one way to tackle enemies, so half of the fun is the journey is discovering your style. Characters are interesting, lots of twists that keep you engaged, and lots of literary nods and respectful handling of the original Carlo Collodi fairy tail which I appreciated.
The only major flaw of the game are the bosses. Every boss after about the 3rd one is wildly unbalanced and broken. I am all for a difficult challenge, but when world class souls like players cannot beat the boss without a summon and heavily relying on cheese strategies, it saps all the fun that was built up right out of the game until you proceed. It is super frustrating to have such an interesting story suddenly interrupted and put on hold for days or even weeks before a boss designed to literally be unbeatable is somehow miraculously conquered. Other than the cool designs, the QA team fatally dropped the ball with the bosses, and it is the only thing that prevented this otherwise phenomenal game from winning GOTY.
