I think Suzannah ROuntree's review on Vintagenovels.como pretty much hits the nail on the head. I do disagree on one point, however; I don't think the North is Buchan's protagonists' nemesis, rather it is their own, personal internal demons, and they learn that they need God's help to overcome them. And for Buchan, are God and the North one and the same?
