You probably seen all the old 1999-2001 ish reviews about this film and how it bombed, the critics back then seemed to think Robin Williams was mainly a comedy man, or didn't see the meaning in the film which seems to be "what is it that makes us human".
In these times where people are expressing their own gender and race (be it "All Lives Matter" and/or being recognised as one of the many genders under LGBTQ+) it is a very fitting film for this generation, after all Andrew in this film wants to be recognised as human and not be rejected or scrutinised as being a robot (swap out "robot" for race/gender). He goes out of his way to change himself as well as improving his world in this movie by doing so.
Andrew starts out as the "perfect" (from the PoV in the 1990s) naive robot who just out of coincidence happens to have a fault which makes him think for others; more than just what he is programmed to do. Throughout he pretty much becomes more human and more human as close as possible, in a way making people reflect and pick ourselves apart about what makes us human, it's kind of an insight on humanity.
Robin WIlliams was pretty much the perfect role for this (may he RIP) he could give a few chuckles just by how he acts, it doesn't feel 100% robotic which has both benefits as we can more emphasize with him against the negatives which would have been more "realistic" but could have affected Robin's acting and probably made him feel more wooden;
I'd say he got the perfect balance in this movie.
A great family movie, has you chuckling as well as bringing the feels nearer the end, the acting to me is pretty good. This movie is pretty much a must watch if you like movies with Robin William in, have interests in robotics or mildly sci-fi, or them cheesy future movies from before 2000 (it counts its a 1999 movie :P) where we believe flying cars are viable for a few decades at least (would go into all the current engineering/privacy.etc issues that it would bring but thats off-topic for a review)
If you're still reading this review, just go see it, I gave you a brief overview but that definitely doesn't give this film any justice, it's so underrated and is probably forgotten to the generation the film was made for. The CGI/VFX used probably doesn't hold up but that's nitpicking something that was pretty good for it's time.
