I watched this morbid movie 2 days ago and I'm still depressed. If you like the X-Men movies, and want to continue to enjoy them, you should consider skipping this one. Forever. It makes every other movie leading up to it as well as every epic fight, every heroic act, every glimmer of hope in the future feel utterly pointless and futile as it is swallowed by soul-smothering darkness. The end.
Spoiler alert** The creators must have taken a bad lesson from "Alien 3" which tried to shock fans of the franchise by unceremoniously killing offevery survivor audiences had bonded with in "Aliens". Similarly, as the movie opens we learn that every single mutant has already been hunted down and murdered, except for two fan favorites with miserable attitudes that we are forced to watch suffer and slowly succumb to physical and mental disease and death. The movie is incredibly violent, but since the bad guys are unknowns and almost no character development for them, there is little sense of satisfaction or justice served when they (or the innocents for that matter) are stabbed through the face or decapitated with adamantium claws. It just feels like gore for the sake of gore with a helping of guilt because you are numb to it all. Well at least the acting is decent, the effects are great, and we can feel good that a handful of adorable children escape the bloodbath. As long as we can forget that they are all escaped sociopaths and trained assassins prone to violent outbursts now without adult supervision.
