Being a Daphne du Maurier fan in my schooldays, I was eagerly waiting for this release. However it was disappointing. I expected a lot more justice to the plot than the grandeur of the setting. The movie lacked the build-up required to the mystery, it spent so much time on the earlier days before marriage than the days afterwards, which needed more time to adjust the audience’s perception. The subdued feelings of Maxim till the day of confession, where the 2nd ‘Mrs. de Winter’ begins to doubt Maxim’s true feelings, was hardly emphasised in the movie. In fact it was all unnecessarily annexed with nudity and sexism. Not required. The most important confession scene and the days beyond was rushed up. Danvers’ role was hardly as sinister as she should have been shown. The ending of Danvers should have been left to imagination. The credit scene theme didn’t match the theme of the film. One time watch at maximum.
