I found the combination of soap opera and ISIS kidnapping to be in poor taste especially since it's delivered with made-for-TV superficiality. The mother character Alex quickly goes from kind of intriguing to extremely annoying especially since so many of her scenes are so highly improbable, like her ridiculous sit-down meeting with a Hamas leader. That sort of thing just managed to be credible in Homeland, which clearly this show wants to emulate (note copy-cat opening images/sounds) but unfortunately does not.
