I first read this around 1972. It stuck with me. Reading it now again, I am reminded of the poignant ending. I liked it then, but 45ish years of maturing gave me a far better appreciation of the style than that seventeen year old kid had. I don't remember having the intense emotional reaction to it that I had re-reading it now.
