I think this gets poor reviews because the subject matter is dark and difficult to watch. Mothers don't want to admit they've had feelings at times of deep despair. Nobody wants to think their mother could have had difficult times parenting. The ending could use some work. It felt unresolved.

It's the conflict about protecting your only child vs your morals, ethics and conscience Also shows this judge seeming to want to fix the inequity of the justice system for minorities but then during a personal crises uses that inequity to protect his white privileged son.
