The characters are very realistic. Some reviews marked it as less than 5 stars because the reviewers failed to understand them, only choosing to see the archetype the character represents instead. Both characters have their strengths and their flaws. Cherry is quiet/introverted but very intuitive of other's feelings, Smile is extroverted but very self conscious of her teeth. Smile encourages Cherry to keep posting his haiku and express himself verbally and Cherry helps her eventually overcome her complex. It's actually the first mainstream romance anime movie in which the girl also has an interpersonal problem, not just the guy. Watch the movie for a realistic relationship between multi layered and well written characters, beautiful scenery (those fluffy clouds!!) and realistic complications a relationship eventually brings rather than a fantasy "manic pixie dream girl" moment we often get in modern anime..
