I've read several of the negative reviews posted and there are a couple of things I disagree with. Now I will preface this by saying I am by no means a professional film critic and I don't understand the technical aspect of film, however, as a female in the business world and one who enjoys watching entertaining movies I found this film to be extremely enjoyable and relevant.
I think it's natural to compare this film to the animated 1998 version because of the amazing musical score and comedy that movie possessed. However, I don't think that is meant to be the purpose of this film. This film is meant to focus on the share bravery of a women who was determined to save her father, honor her family, and be accepted for who she is.
The question was possed if it was worth fighting to protect a country that didn't view her as equal. Let's not forget that this is based on a true story and as a people we fight to be accepted for who we are in the society we know and we hope to help others along the way. I think we have to do what we feel is right and hope for the best. In this way I think introducing the witch character was relavent because it shows the consequences of our action. 2 women in the same situation had a choice to make. The witch saw herself in Mulan and chose to die (even though she was powerful enough to save Mulan without dying), it was symbolic of her dying to the path she's chosen and helping someone else along.
Sometimes the comedy and music can over shadow a message within a movie.
