Totally hilarious as only a combination of English humor and Italian culture could pull off. It gathers speed, literally and figuratively, as the film progresses. Memorable were the deadpan Michael Caine character in his crazy yet ingenious robbery plan and Noel Coward as the luxuriously-cared-for imprisoned criminal, especially near the end when the entire prison celebrates him as if he were the King of England when they hear the gold robbery was successful. The film reminded me of elements of American films like “Oceans 11” and the characters and music of “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou”. The great escape visuals and the finale music of “We are the Great Self-Preservation Society” (including that dandy tambourine) are unequaled in daring uniqueness. And shall we take a vote on whether they make it past the cliffhanger? I know I myself have a grand plan to retrieve the gold and get everybody out safe. Do you?
