Edit: I've seen most of the series multiple times at this point, and I feel like the rating is justified - the TLDR is 80 percent of this show is fantastic, and 20 percent complete letdown. The Vicious/Julia scenes can 90% be skipped, while Everything to do with the original story OR Spike, Jet, Faye, are wonderful and I'd love to see more. Also a big miss with Radical Ed, but I think a toned down but still kooky version would work well given a non-cameo chance.
This show has/had promise. Parts of it are absolutely amazing and had me jumping up and down, and others left me perplexed and/or disappointed. I dislike about 80 percent of the storyline between Spike/Vicious/Julia, especially anything to do with Vicious/Julia. It was just felt odd and jarring, and sometimes forced. Some is on the actors, but I'd say most with the writing. Granted, there isn't a ton of story to keep canon and myriad ways to shift things around, but I think they missed the mark in that respect.
It didn't seem like Spike could actually do any real martial arts in the first episode, but got better as the show progressed to the point I stopped noticing quickly, and I felt like Faye's rough around the edges vibe was more represented through uncouth language than actually not trusting S & J and being a little standoffish. However, the bond between the three of them grew fairly well both somewhat realistically and naturally.
Some other great aspects were the music, which is phenomenal(excepting Julia, though she does have a great voice), the scenery, how different yet very similar all the planets are and feel-basically the photography and cinematography were very well done. My favorite bit of camera work was Pierrot Le Fou's face appearing in the clown's and becoming one.
But Edward? I dunno, just a terrible entrance in nearly all ways (not counting the "hot tip" halfway through the series)... Not a fan, but hopefully with more time that gets turned around.
All in all though, I'd watch it again, and revel in the amazing bits (of which there are plenty), and probably skip the last episode and a half. Hopefully we get more Cowboy Bebop, and hopefully less of it will deal with Vicious and Julia-it could be a great show.
