This was indeed a trap for the average viewer, they took a guy who used to be a star, but has only done a couple of average films in the last 10 years and not much more than that, and they took a director who has four pretty good films to his name and another 15 garbage projects. It was bound to be a train wreck.
It ha's always been my opinion that certain directors only have a certain number of good films in their tank, and that is certainly the case with this guy, he had four good films in his tank. I don't think he'll ever do another good film, so why don't we all collectively just avoid every single thing that he does, and save ourselves some time and save ourselves some grief?
This film was absolutely horrendous, the direction, the writing, the plot devices, none of them worked. The pop star, and the daughter didn't work, the wife didn't work, Hartnett didn't work. Nothing about this film worked. How does Hollywood continue to produce such garbage? I can't imagine that they read the script and said oh yeah this is really clever.
Hollywood is so tired it is so creatively bankrupt. The question that comes to mind for me is why are Hollywood movies so terrible these days and why is there so much great TV, why such a dilemma?
