What is this movie telling us? What is this movie all about? There are a lot of people and i mean a LOT of people who misunderstood this
film. So now it is about time to fully explain. For the past few decades, Godzilla movies have always been regarded as cheesy movies about
monsters destroying cities or other monsters. On the surface, yes it's true. But deep down, Godzilla movies have been so much more than
that. And Godzilla: King of the Monsters is no exception. For example, take a look at the original Godzilla film back in 1954.
In the film, Godzilla symbolizes nuclear holocaust from Japan's perspective and has since been culturally identified as a strong
metaphor for nuclear weapons. Brian Merchant from Motherboard called the film "a bleak, powerful metaphor for nuclear power that still
endures today" and on its themes, he stated: "It's an unflinchingly bleak, deceptively powerful film about coping with and taking
responsibility for incomprehensible, manmade tragedy. Specifically, nuclear tragedies. It's arguably the best window into post-war
attitudes towards nuclear power we've got—as seen from the perspective of its greatest victims." Terrence Rafferty from The New York
Times stated Godzilla was "an obvious gigantic, unsubtle, grimly purposeful metaphor for the atomic bomb" and felt the film was
"extraordinarily solemn, full of earnest discussions".
So what's Godzilla KOTM all about? In my own perspective, Godzilla KOTM is an extremely deep film. Michael Dougherty himself, the director
of the film, stated: "Godzilla movies are big, they're fun, but underneath all the monster mayhem and apocalyptic destruction, these movies
are allegories. That's how the japanese initially invented and portrayed the character, and i think it's one of the reasons Godzilla has
endured for as long as he has. But they are filled with metaphors, and though the themes have changed over the years, they all leave you with
the same message: that if you push too hard against nature, nature's gonna push back."
And that's what this whole film is about! It's about nature punishing humanity. It's about nature punishing us for what we've done to this
world: We dump garbage everywhere, we commit homicide, we take drugs, we drink while we drive, we rob banks, we rape people, we cut down trees,
we assault people, we kidnap people, we commit suicide, and so on and so on. And that's what Godzilla KOTM is all about. It's about nature punishing
humanity. It represents our world falling apart because of us. It represents us humans, as KING OF THE MONSTERS.
