I was looking forward to seeing this film but left feeling quite disappointed and underwhelmed. Alfie has the cast and presumably the budget to make a good film but misses the mark with a poorly written script and undeveloped characters. The monologues Alfie gives throughout the film (especially the end) are shallow and basic, sort of like the speeches you'd hear Lynsey Lohan say at the end of a cringey teen film. A lot more work could have been done on Alfie's character to explain why he was the way he was and help us bond with him a like him a bit more. The 'feelings' he caught for the older lady felt a bit out of the blue because that storyline felt rushed through and under developed. There could have been an opportunity in the film for us to bond with a strong female protagonist who Alfie falls for which would have given the story a lot more depth. But overall it was just a bit boring, shallow and could have been written by anyone on the street. Also, the ending was poor. I expected us to at least see him making an effort to bond with his baby, but nope. We don't hear anything more about him again which just felt a bit odd. Alfie was a bit of a pleb but not a total monster, it didn't seem fitting with his character that he'd just not bother to get to know his son. The part of the film I liked was that he ended up alone, but even that part I just felt could have been done better. It just missed the mark with every aspect for me.
