Being a huge Carpenter fan, I had put off watching The Ward for a long time given all the negative reviews: I didn't want to see a "bad" Carpenter movie. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised at the overall result. Although this movie is certainly not Carpenter's best, it is a decent horror movie. I think the main issue is that it fails to be a "Carpenter" movie; it feels more generic, and I think that's what a lot of people have tried to pinpoint. There are not many of his signature shots. However, the story is good with a nice twist ending, the atmosphere is eerie, the use of a single location serves the movie well, and Amber Heard delivers a great performance.
