This film confused the hell out of my wife and I. She’s never seen the first. I’m a fan of it. We were both confused. The racial and social undertones are overt, which is fine and needs to be discussed, but the confusion of the characters in the script and it’s presentation heavily reduce the impact of the message.
Artists often do research for their work. That, in and of itself, justifies Anthony seeking Burke out and getting the story/background with which he was rewarded. Unfortunately, this character did not need to come back at any point. In fact, the flashback William has of his sister and her friend being murdered by the supernatural Candyman completely nullifies the theme of Candyman being an “avenging angel” as he is portrayed as through the rest of the film. Beyond that, I feel like it would have made much more sense for Anthony to mutilate himself to complete his change into said avenging angel.
Both my wife and I work in film and read a kit of scripts. Maybe we’re just jaded but I feel like there is either a relatively large collection of scenes that were cut for time or they weren’t making their days on set, never got the shots in the can and decided to cut it together without it.
Anyway, this could have been a MUCH better film than what I saw. That’s my 2 cents.
