A refreshing change, set in spectacular scenery, showing to a certain extent the reality of life in some African countries and the interplay between the not always likeable Western charities and the people they help. I’ve lived in Kenya and seen village life, though never the violence portrayed here. Good to hear Kiswahili spoken, though I had to check it was spoken in the Congo. The lead character is plausible. She has lost her baby, she has lost her husband; what has she to live for but to find him. There are fearless women who do exciting things, even if they put themselves in danger. More annoying is the uncouth female doctor, who is not typical of real doctors working for overseas charities, I’m sure. The sub-plot with the blind characters is interesting and well acted, but one wonders if real blind actors could have been employed. I’ve yet to see the denouement, but there’s enough interest for me to keep going with it.
