I may include spoilers to give my full opinion.
I blame myself for having such high expectations for this movie but I’m sad to say it is not worth the time or money. The plot of the mulan was so well done the first time around it's kinda hard to mess it up, but the weakest point of the movie was the character development. The movie starts off showing young Mulan as this adventurous and energetic little girl who has a good relationship with her sister, loves to chase animals, loyal, brave, and… true? Alright well that’s one down but where’s rest? Mom and Dad definitely have their favorite child and it doesn’t look like they get along that much, but at least they love their kids. Onto our favorite trio Huey, Dewey, And Louie… wait no. Yao, Ling, and Chien Po + 2. We still get the silly cartoon side of them… kind of… Yao is still a bully but Ling isn’t a silly jokester and Chien Po isn’t the gentle giant we know and love anymore. Then we got the lucky cricket who is now just a guy named Cricket and the forced love interest whose name I already forgot. After meeting all our characters the only thing I want to see is a three part prequel with the commander, the emperor, and mulan’s dad against Böri Khan senior. Another character that wasn’t part of the original but is now a part of the theme of the movie is Xian Lang. wait who? Oh the hawk lady. I don’t think her name was mentioned once even though she’s one of the key characters in Mulan’s story. No one really had defining characteristics that made them memorable or likable.
There are many things I didn’t like. The dissonant audio that feels like it’s out of place, the excessive cuts with slow mo that give me a headache with my eyes trying to keep up,and the choppy cg that's kinda disappointing to see in a movie like this. But I have to say it did have it’s moments. It was too big and failed when it could’ve been a small masterpiece.
Also how are you going to have a bunch of martial artists and have them do any real fight scenes. And everytime someone talks, it sounds like they’re trying to be the next asian batman.
