Honest genuine review from a BGS fan who has actually played it.
This is a good game just perhaps not a great game.
First off, I love Bethesda and have played Fallout 3/4 and Skyrim. I have been looking forward to Starfield since its announcement. I had pre-ordered the early access so have had the opportunity to play it for a bit longer than some. Think I’m on about 48 hours.
The start is a bit slow and like most Bethesda games there is a lot to digest. There are notable improvements to the visuals and movement/combat system. Is the combat as slick as Call of Duty? No. Is it 10x better than Fallout 4? Yes.
As BGS titles there are bugs. Crew mates going missing, layers not quite right and it crashing every so often. If you’ve played a previous BGS title this will not be anything new. However there is an improvement to the auto save feature so it’s rare you would lose too much progress. Still frustrating but hasn’t actually caused me much grief.
The functions of the games like outposts, crew management and spaceship building are complex but easy enough to navigate with a few YouTube tutorials. Spent hours attempting to understand space trade routes but decided to watch a pro who had more time than me.
I would also like to highlight the complaints of travelling from let’s say orbit to a planet or flying to another planet without a grav drive with the most common one being you can’t just fly there. If anyone wants to know it takes 9 months to go from Earth to Mars. Who has the time to travel between planets without jumping? This to me is something of a non-complaint.
The main story is okay but I actually prefer the faction missions. You get a lot out of the side missions like credits, free stuff and XP that make the main story a bit less challenging.
This game has ruined my sleep pattern, I have barely seen my infant daughter and my wife has her suspicions that I am dork confirmed. This is the perfect game if you have hours upon hours to pour into it. If you have a job, a family or any responsibilities be patient as it will get better the more you play. I think 4/5 is tough as there are so many aspects to the game so if I could rate it out of 10 it would be a 7.8 out of 10.
All in all I will recommend it to everyone that asks but with the pretence that it will ruin their life. I do not regret buying it, I hope you’ll appreciate my honest review and this will encourage you download the game but not on the pretence that’s it’s a flawless gem. I would also choose to ignore journalists who like to be harsh on reviews to be edgy.
