If He Had Been With Me is messy in every way possible. Messy emotions, messy decisions, messy relationships, messy endings. And strangely? I loved that. I love when books feel like real life confusing, raw, unfiltered. Life isn’t always poetic and pretty. Sometimes, it’s just a quiet tragedy happening in the background of ordinary moments.
Jack, Jamie, Sylvie, Sasha… honestly? Background noise. No one really stood out. No one really lived. They were there to fill scenes but never really owned them, even their mothers.
Jamie, oh, him with Sasha just too much, okay ffine Jamie cheated but why autumn was so sad and depressed wasnt she in love with another person while being with jamie? like we are not supposed to feel sorry for her. jamie character, ugh It almost felt like he was in the story to delay the inevitable, which cheapened his presence entirely.
Sylvie, Finny’s girlfriend, was interesting for a second. You could feel a bit of tension between her and Autumn, but it fizzled out. There was no real confrontation, no layered rivalry. I wanted to see Autumn’s jealousy, her anger, her quiet hurt. Instead, we just got observations and distance. Sylvie never felt like a real person either..just another mirror to reflect what Autumn couldn't have.
The writing though? That’s where Laura Nowlin shines. It’s dreamy, delicate, drenched in emotion. Some passages felt like poetry.
I don’t regret reading it. If He Had Been With Me is a story that captures the ache of missed chances. I cried. But I also felt like I never really knew these people. I wanted more than their pain. I wanted their selves.
Would I recommend it? Yes, if you love emotional chaos, first loves, and what-ifs.
But if you’re someone who craves character depth, layered relationships, and growth, prepare to feel a little empty.
And maybe, in a strange way, that was the point.
