I rewatched this film recently in its newly edited form entitled "coda: the death of Michael Corleone". All I can say is, fool me twice, shame on me. Not that I was expecting the acting to be any better, nor the terrible Italian speaking parts to be improved. There was simply no need to re-edit this film. It was originally not that great and its new form is even worse. Other reviews praise its new timing, which I could not care to agree or disagree with. The fact remains that it's a terrible conclusion.
The Vincent Mancini character hardly knowing Michael then becoming Don is ridiculous.
Connie, who resented Michael for killing their brother now lives with Michael and advises him - also ridiculous.
The way Michael's children express themselves to Michael is just completely unrealistic for any father-child relationship, never mind the fact that dad is a Mafioso.
Sophia Coppola - I feel sorry for her. Dad should've known better than to cast his own daughter.
What happened to the Michael Corleone of GF1 and GF2? He's a totally different character!
So, up until now, Kay dreads Michael, had aborted a son, divorced Michael and remarried. Are we really meant to believe that she has always and will always love Michael? Please!
And finally, the new ambiguous ending, where Michael doesn't die, is not as profound as Coppola thinks it is. We get it, mate. His daughter dying is worse than him dying. Cut to the final words added on screen - "a Sicilian never forgets". Seriously? Childish nonsense!
