-SOME MINOR SPOILERS-
As a fan of the first installment of TLOU I purposefully avoided reviews, spoilers and leaks so I could play (and finish) the sequel first and judge it for myself. I just finished it tonight after powering through it for the past week. First off the complaints of violence, seriously? The game’s revenge filled story takes place during a zombie apocalypse and features warring factions fighting for survival. I mean in the “real world” someone was even killed recently over a Popeyes chicken sandwich, so let’s not kid ourselves here. Violence should be expected. Back to the game: I found the game very rich, enjoyable and the characters relatable, and I enjoyed the emotional ending quite a bit. And yes I actually finished the game! (“She’s at the pillars.”) I can say for certain after playing the game and then looking at reviews from users that most of these people have not actually played the game. It’s quite obnoxious and lazy to review a game without having played or finished it. Myself, by the end I was routing for Abby! And yeah her body breaks normal female stereotypes, she’s no Laura Croft. It’s honestly a relief to see diverse body types depicted not for purposes of plot, but because that’s just how they look. You want immersion? I’d say that’s immersion. This is a sequel that fits the first, and doesn’t feel forced. Like other ND games you can see and feel the attention to detail and it is much appreciated, especially in the age of the annual franchise installments. As expected, the story was excellent and thought out. I enjoyed the unexpected time jumps as well as playing the two leads in order to develop their passionate stories. The cutscenes and flashbacks help to flesh out the story and it’s various relationships and gives everything in the game purpose and meaning. The additions of new gameplay mechanics and weapons is a high point of the game, but it’s the stunning maps and the rich, character driven story that kept me playing until the tear jerker ending. Quality storytelling like this is rare in games, and part 2 goes toe to toe with its predecessor. For fans of the original, this is the perfect sequel.
