Definitely one of my favourite films.
As a teenager in the modern day of soulless cash grab movies, I often find it hard to sit myself down to watch a movie. Reasons for this may include bad actors unable to sell the emotional parts of the movie, blatant product placement to the point it’s unbearable, to horrible writing on the writers behalf - as they try to connect with a younger audience but are incompetent when writing an appealing story without coming off as cringy. This, admittedly coming out years prior, is a movie that is the epitome of writing at it’s finest. It’s also awesome the amount of incredible, well-known actors as there. Some of which, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mat Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Whalberg.
Something that made this movie so great in my eyes is the fact that it is a twist of the normal trope of: Good looking, perfect scores good guy cop takes down the corrupt musty looking mafia dude, while also getting the girl. (Not saying Leo is musty, but in fact absolutely gorgeous but is portrayed as the poorer, not so well-off guy in this movie). When it is in fact, the opposite. This movie is a thrilling, gut-wrenching, oooh I wonder whats gonna happen next kind of movie. It is one where, you come out in awe. There’s no way else to describe it - or at least that’s what I believe. It’s not one of those movies that you know the good guy will inevitably come out on top, despite hoping that’s what happens. It’s a movie where even when the crime boss is defeated, you know its not over - not yet.
Its a movie thats not afraid to include “intimate” scenes and references and is not afraid to get a bit bloody at times, which is justified by its 18+ rating.
But overall, I’d give it a 8.5/10. It has aged very well, most stuff holds up nearly two decades after it’s initial release and the cgi is not shabby. Would definitely watch again and I suggest you do too.
Enjoy, you won’t regret it.
