So far, a very disappointing read. It's hard to believe the author of this book also wrote Pillars of Earth, World Without End, etc. Those books had richly developed characters, vibrant dialog, intriguing story lines; sadly, all lost in this novel.

Riveting story. The day to day agony and dehumanization of slavery. Bitter but always hopeful. Mystical but unredeaming. A true descent into hell.
The writing is sublime.
Sadly, will be banned in FL schools.in

McCarthy's prose is breathtaking. He packs so much in each sentence, that each seems to be on the verge of bursting forth in imagery and emotion.
