I’m a big fan of Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass. This, however, was top-shelf trash. Truly cringeworthy. A predictable formula and pontificating at nearly every turn, it’s a mawkish sociopolitical allegory thinly veiled as a story. And an Edgar Allen Poe one at that!
What a travesty and missed opportunity. Zero suspense, unrelatable characters who are caricatures of humanity, and writing that’s as superficial as the agenda it drowns in.
Spare yourself the bombast and declaiming of trite, simplistic worldviews. Or if that’s your thing, have a blade on hand just in case you’re tempted to pierce your skull when you’ve had enough force-feeding.
Poe will be proud you did.
