Educated working class single mum refusing to sign on and feeds and clothes her daughter by joining the oldest profession. Costello clearly has CPTSD and functions (just about) as a good enough mother. Her life has the toxic trio running through it like Blackpool Rock. Her chosen family, all equally as desperate and marginalised by their own adverse childhood experiences, manage to support each other dysfunctionally on a roller coaster of abuse, addiction, and mental illness; through love, acceptance and non judgement. Allowing these characterisations to be vulnerable in what is a realistic and authentic portrayal of life the author manages to create a dark comedy that in many ways I am able to relate to. If you're easily offended don't watch it. There are some reviews here from people who didn't finish the series. They are judgemental and bigoted. Yes, Costello could have sought to access public funding, she could have got a better job. Maybe she could have done those things if she wasn't living with the effects of trauma and addiction. I'm glad some people have no insight into what life can be like for some of us, because at least they 'live' in a world where every problem has a solution, where there's a system that works to protect those surviving abuse and trauma. I'm happy for you, move on now you privileged lot, see you next Tuesday 😉
