After seeing this movie I felt very conflicted because I truly wanted to love the movie. When I left the theatre I couldn’t stop thinking about the feeling so I went online to search for validation and discovered other reviewers thought the same as me.
The plot is choppy and not forgiving to those who do not know the book. I know there is quite a bit of hype around Gerwig's direction but maybe her talents best left to more independent films. Little Women is hardly a book adapted into mumblecore. I understood the angle at the ending - but was looking for it all through out the movie. Was she trying to flesh out the characters more? Was this Amy's story and not Jo's? The ending was very good - but would have liked still a little more romance/passion between Jo and the Professor or any of the characters honestly. I mean come on the editor is not wrong here.
I like the actress who portrayed Amy quite a bit - but she needed to be younger for at least the first half. Also, she is much more vain and self seeking that this rendition would have made her out to be. Beth was fine. Meg was hard to believe but Watson did a good job. I like Chalamet in general but it was hard to fall in love with him a Laurie - far too boyish for his own good. Perhaps the biggest miscast in this was Laura Dern while she is lovely - she was a poor Marmie cold and uninviting. Sarandon could have played her again for all I care. Ultimately I wanted to fall in love with the characters all over again and I left feeling like I just went on a bad Tinder date.
Also the accents through out the film were flimsy and seemed awkward when they did exist. Was this a reenactment of Little Women?
Much like many of the other reviewers here I will tell you to save your pennies from the rag bag and go watch the 1994 version with a fantastic soundtrack, cast, and much more heart than this film ever tried to give us.
