First off, if you are over 18 and were watching this to get scared, you're watching the wrong movie. This is more of a movie for older children hence the PG-13 rating and based on a CHILDREN'S book. I was just thinking about how Alvin Schwartz and Guillermo del Toro are great at bridge gaps across generations, and really what inspired me to write a review. Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories series is a great book for all child thrill seekers across gen x and y and he wrote the series just in time to avoid the hype of the internet and video games. I was just thinking about the Hearse Song that was in the Scary Stories movie and written in Alvin's book in a few verses and bars. Before even knowing how to read music, I knew that song before it had even been played or sung for me. I think it was one of the ways Alvin tried to bridge some gaps between boomers, gen x, and millennials. Then, Guillermo produces this movie, in an age when reading is much less common unless its on a mobile device. A beloved, thrilling book of gen x and y. Finally, Guillermo found a way to bridge the gap across all of the mentioned generations by bringing the stories to life and featuring the Hearse Song throughout the entire film. This is definitely a film I will let my children see as they get older.
TLDR; Alvin Schwartz, Guillermo bridge generational gaps. Great thrilling movie for older children. NOT MEANT TO SCARE ADULTS.
