Building on Dick’s dystopian vision of his home state’s future, BladeRunner 2049 tries to fuse an almost helpless humanity with machine-assisted survival in an over-extracted environment, with varying degrees of success. Not for the feint of heart, the film explores an Alien-like premise of artificial existence, from birth through childhood to manhood - the life of K, our protagonist - in fleeting memories and unreliable research. Poor boy wants to find out more about his mother, but can he live with what he discovers?
