It's difficult to not compare a movie that I've seen over and over to a 'remake'. So, I won't. What I will say is everything in this world has changed in 50 years, and in this case, acting style, directing style, choreographic style, production design, set decoration and even props, have all evolved. The music is timeless and the updated score is just as incredible and in iMax, wow. A friend said that Spielberg has never directed a musical, as though he wrote and choreographed it. He knows. Simple as that. He knows. The weakest link to me didn't matter because the emotional strings this show has, since that red album cover of the original movie was brought into my house when I was a year old, is beyond repair.
You truly cannot be fair and compare the two, both are exceptional in what theyve achieved. Just remember one was made in 1961, and one was made by Steven Spielberg.
I see more than a few Oscar nominations.
Also, people need to realize that they were truer to the original Broadway production than to the the '61 film. So, things might not be exact as the original movie, but more to the stage production.
