This movie left so much to be desired and developed. The characters had little backstory beyond a few randomly placed sentences about privilege and Tashi’s father, who wasn’t explicitly identified as her father and never seen again, asking for photos and her mother caring for her daughter. Their interactions were more like a nanny than a familial relationship.
For these characters to be filled with so much complexity, anguish, competitiveness, and emotion, a why should be provided. This is supposedly a psychological movie, but there is no depth. I sat hoping, yearning for some explanation of how these characters came to be so extreme. Why was Tasha so cold? Why did Art become so angry towards Patrick? Why was Art so conniving? Why did Patrick become homeless? How did his career become so mediocre when it was initially so promising?
Toxic in every sense… Tashi had no moral compass… her why was never understood; yet, her anger caused her to destroy these men and herself. Perhaps, with some people, we never truly get their why… perhaps this movie was explorative of how some people have co-dependent relationships that cause them to betray themselves in pursuit of love, validation, and acceptance. I wanted to see love between Art and Tashi. I wanted to see Art loved, vindicated… for him to love himself enough to walk away.
Honestly, it seemed like a long, drawn out soft porn, a love story between the two men with Tasha simply being a conductor of their truest desires…their passion to experience one another intimately, using her as a conduit to express that energy.
This movie, to have such a big name as Zendaya, was terribly underdeveloped. It’s an unanswered question… a waste of time that leaves you with more questions than answers. Don’t waste your time.
